Emily Gong (2003-2009)
Born in Hong Kong during the summer of 2003, Emily Gong was the first child of Patricia and George. During these early years Emily was a very happy child who had an infectious smile and brought much joy to those that knew her.
Yet on May 17th 2009, shortly before she turned six years old, a tragic event occurred which would change their families life forever. While playing at home in Beijing Emily was fatally wounded when a marble fireplace collapsed upon her. The solid marble that came away from the wall weighed over 200 pounds and had only been secured to the plasterboard by unsuitable glue by the house developers. As was to become evident, the builders refused to take responsibility for the accident and wouldn’t even offer so much as an apology to Emily’s grieving family. Subsequently, Patricia, George, family and friends have felt compelled to fight for justice for their daughter and have gathered many compassionate supporters along their journey.
In all of the turmoil the family have felt since that fateful day they have been able to forgive those whose actions they believe took their daughter from them due to the faith they have in Jesus Christ.
Emily’s story has since become famous throughout China from media interest, social media, blogs and TV news stations covering the families strive for accountability. Patricia and George know that what happened to them is not a rare occurrence and are continually encouraged in their goal by hearing that others are also willing to speak up against the reckless practices of constructors, home builders, and decorators.
